For this discussion, I have chosen to describe Jennings’s third sign of ethical collapse. “Young ‘uns and a bigger-than-life CEO” is the third sign in Jennings’s Seven Signs of Ethical Collapse. I chose this sign because it particularly hits home for a friend of mine. A friend of mine was working at a company he had worked at for years. He loved the community, loved the people, and loved the company. Two years prior to his leave, a new manager came into the company. After a few years, he noticed a lot of the employees who had been there long term were being replaced by brand new employees who had little to no experience in the industry. He said there were many changes that not everyone agreed with and discussed with the new manager during their meetings or when conflict arised. When he discussed with the manager his concerns and worries for the upcoming year, he was notified that he should put in his notice to leave. In Jennings’s third sign of ethical collapse, she points out that CEOs sometimes hire employees that are inexperienced and looking for any opportunity to get into the industry so that they don’t question the way things are run (“Seven Signs of Ethical Collapse”, 2012).

What is introspection? It is a process that involves looking inward to examine your own thoughts (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). Jennings says introspection is the key to resolve this sign of ethical collapse. Jennings says the company is on the right track if it’s willing to let anyone in the organization say, “Wait a minute, is this really something we should be doing?” (“Seven Signs of Ethical Collapse”, 2012). That is how I would address this sign. I would gather the old and new employees to bring attention to the matter. From there, I would organize a committee to bring the attention of the board and/or manager to the subject and work together toward a compromised goal. It is our ethical responsibility to look at things and question whether it is ethically right.
