Mr. A is a 44 year old male who operates his own very successful landscaping business. He has been married for 15 years to Kristy a stay at home mom of 2 children, Beth 6 years old and Ben 10 years old. He recently suffered a depilating accident while removing trees from his property. One of the trees fell through the top of the bobcat machine he was operating and hit Mr. A right on the top of the head.
He was airlifted to a major trauma center and underwent emergency surgery for swelling in his brain. It was uncertain whether he would live, though after several months and rehabilitation he was able to return home. He has a severe brain injury which leaves him with significant memory loss (long term as well as short term). He is paralyzed from the waist down and confined to a wheel chair. He is able to feed himself and do some self-care, though he often forgets things such as to turn off the stove.
His wife has taken over running the landscape business as it is their only source of income and she has never worked outside the home. Beth and Ben do not fully understand what has happened and are not coping well with attending after school day care while their mother works.
