Managing type 1 diabetes is a 24/7 job. It impacts everything a child does from what they eat, to the sport they play, to sleepovers and even play time. It can place families under significant stress as they do everything they can to keep their child safe and healthy – especially when they go to school. It can also be challenging for principals, teachers and school staff to know how they can best support a student with type 1 diabetes and their family. For this assessment students are required to identify the role of the nurse in promoting the uptake and success of the Diabetes in Schools Program. Students should consider discussing the following in their essay: 1. The significance of the Diabetes in Schools Program 2. The role of the nurse in health screening, promotion and illness prevention across the lifespan 3. The physical and mental health assessment a primary care nurse would adopt or recommend as part of the Diabetes in Schools Program 4. How the Diabetes in Schools Program contributes to person-centred and family care 5. How may your personal values and beliefs may impact on person-centred care
