In Unit 5, consider the role of professional nursing organizations in supporting your growth as a nursing advocate. Apply your knowledge from the weekly readings and presentations and be sure to include outside resources in your responses.

Find 2-3 state or national professional nursing organizations relating to your future career goals or patient population of interest. Review the history and mission/vision of the organization, costs of membership, legislative/national issues being targeted, and benefits of membership. Answer the following questions:

Discuss the relationship between professional nursing organizations and advocacy. How effective are nursing organizations at advancing or defeating proposed health policies at a national or state level?
Identify the organizations you found. List the organizations’ names, websites, membership costs, and a brief overview of member benefits. Also, list any current national issues identified on the website. Would you join any of the organizations you found? Why/why not?
How can professional nursing organizations become stronger advocates for changes in health policies at a national level? What role do you play as a nursing professional?
