To search for an article, I used the nursing database provided by the Walden University Library (Walden University Library, n.d.). I started by going to the Databases A-Z: NursingLinks to an external site. link in this week’s Required Readings. This page contains 15 nursing databases; any of them will take you to a search page where you can search amongst countless scholarly articles pertaining to your field of interest.

I chose APA PsycInfo, which touts itself as the largest resource of peer-reviewed articles pertaining to the behavioral sciences and mental health. As an aspiring Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, this was the obvious choice. It gives full-text access to the best peer-reviewed scholarly articles in the field. This level of access is very beneficial for me and my colleagues, as it allows us to research the latest therapies that can directly impact the way we practice mental health psychiatry.

I found the search engine itself to be easy enough to use. It can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. A simple search phrase will yield all the results you need, yet the search page also gives users the option to customize their results with staggering specificity.

I was curious to examine the relationship between Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and those suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), as the two seem to have very similar etiologies. I found a research article from the European Journal of Psychotraumatology that examined the effectiveness of psychotherapy for PTSD on treating BPD as well. This study found that “brief, intensive trauma-focused treatment can be a valuable option for individuals suffering from both PTSD and BPD” (Kolthof, 2022).

A challenge I encountered while using the APA PsycInfo database is that with most of my queries, I found the results to be overly broad and far too numerous for me to reasonably sift through with the time I had. This required me to narrow down the results using the sidebar that allowed me to customize by publication date, article type, language, publisher, and several other modifiers. This was an extra step that ultimately didn’t end up being a huge inconvenience.

I would highly recommend this database to other users in the PMHNP program. The ability to narrow down the search results proved to be a huge benefit. Not only was I able to narrow down the search results by date and publication details, it allowed me to select for classification (the type of disorder to treatment), methodology (the type of study, whether quantitative, interview, lit review, or clinical trial), tests & measures (type of test administered to collect data), and population (male, female, outpatient, inpatient).
