Preparation
Prior to engaging with this simulation, review Health Canada’s information on Supervised
Consumption Sites (2023) [link].
Once you are in the virtual gaming simulation, you will also be prompted to review character
profiles.
Prebrief
Basic Assumption
“It is our belief that you are intelligent, capable, care about doing your best and want to improve.” Psychological Safety
Virtual simulation provides an opportunity to practice applying our knowledge and skills in a
safe space. It is okay to make mistakes in simulation. This provides an opportunity to learn from our mistakes and identify learning needs to support gaps in knowledge. Your performance in this virtual simulation will not be graded, however your reflection on the learning experience
afterwards will be reviewed and will count towards Jill to insert grade.
The nature of this simulation may trigger those who may have experienced or live with their
own mental health and substance use disorders. At any time, please feel free toe xit the
simulation to attend to your mental and emotional well-being.

In this virtual simulation, you will see how Eddie, a male client experiencing distress after waking up from an overdose, is supported by members of the interprofessional team in a harm reduction facility.
This simulation will give you the opportunity to:
– Implement de-escalation methods as they pertain to community mental health workers, nurses, and police
– Identify the values and ethics of interprofessional practice
– Understand interprofessional communication strategies
– Identify and apply limits of professional roles
Confidentiality During this simulation, we ask you to be non-judgmental and open to learning from both the simulation, your facilitator(s), and fellow learners who are debriefing the simulation. It is however important to remember that “what happens in the simulation stays in the simulation”.
By maintaining confidentiality related to the virtual simulation experience and others’ choices or comments, you help to create psychologically safe learning environment and effective
experience for all learners.
Simulation Logistics
Instructions and Timeline
You will engage with this simulation independently, asynchronously. This simulation will take you approximately 30 minutes to complete. As proof of completion, submit your learner
summary and completed self-debrief to D2L Dropbox titled: Jill to insert.
Debrief
Upon completion of the virtual gaming simulation, please
☒complete the self-debrief
☐ attend group debrief

Simulation
Please access the virtual gaming simulation here: HYPERLINK
“https://app.affinitylearning.ca/community/browse/577″Collaborative and Interdisciplinary De-Escalation (Bound et al., 2022).
Upon completion of the simulation, download your learner summary. You will be required to submit this as proof of completion.
Debrief
Self-Debrief
INACSL Best Practice Guidelines recommend that a self-debrief is completed 30-60 minutes after completing the virtual gaming simulation. Please take the time to reflect on and answer the following questions. This is your opportunity to consolidate knowledge and apply your learnings to practice.
Question to be answered
In a separate document, answer the following questions. Upon completion, your self-debrief answers should be approximately
1. Provide a summary of the key points in the scenario.
2. Re-tell the scenario from the perspective of Eddie. How might Eddie’s perspective
differ from your own?
3. What thoughts/feeling/emotions did you have during the simulation? Has your
perspective changed since completing the simulation? If so, how?
4. What values/concepts guided your decision-making during the simulation?
5. What went well during the simulation? What do you believe contributed to this
success?
6. At what point(s) during the simulation did you feel unsure of your decisions? What
learning need have you identified based on this?
7. What new learning goal do you have as a result of this scenario? Write a new SMART goal below, identifying and citing at least three specific and credible resources you will use to meet this new learning goal.
8. How will you apply this simulation and its teachings to your nursing practice?
