1. Provide the details of your disruption: Your location at the time the disruption occurs, type of disruption, disruption duration, the only available communication tool, and what’s missing during the disruption.

I am located at a clinic or provider office, working as staff. We are currently experiencing an illness outbreak. It is projected to last a month. We are out of antibiotics and can only communicate face to face.

2.     Research how this disruption would impact you in your role as a registered nurse. Identify 2 tasks that you would delegate and identify who you would delegate the task to.  Provide a rationale for this delegation.  What are the policies and procedures surrounding your type of disruption and location? How will the only available communication tool and missing item alter the plan?

Clinic’s and providers offices manage infectious diseases regularly. When an outbreak occurs, they are tasked with identification of signs and symptoms, and education on prevention of spread as well as treatment (Nie, e.t. al. 2022). Transmission prevention in the setting of an office is centered around proper precautions. Utilizing standard precautions and transmission-based precautions will help to reduce nurses’ exposure as well as clients being seen (Hinkle, 2022). During an outbreak personal protective equipment is utilized at a rapid pace. A UAP can be designated to monitor stock of PPE and notify the manager when supply is running low. The only form of communication is face to face. A popular method of seeing patients during the COVID 19 pandemic was to call patients in from their private vehicles individually to reduce exposure. This is not an option in this scenario. The first person to see a patient will be at reception and registration. A short form can be given to the patients to identify possible symptoms of the illness outbreak. The UAP at reception can provide PPE based on answers from this short form. Depending on the type of illness, the omission of antibiotics can be life threatening. If an antibiotic is indicated a written script can be given to be filled in another location.

3.     Identify any priorities, issues, or potential near-future issues that affect your work.

Immunocompromised patients and patients with chronic illnesses which may be exacerbated by an illness outbreak are at risk for exposure in the office or clinic setting. Separating the infected patients from the well patients is a must in this setting.

This illness outbreak is projected to last a month. When an outbreak is present, fear of exposure prevents people from following up on concerns and routine care, including vaccinations.

4.     How does the duration of disruption affect your plans?

In a pediatric office setting delay in care could be detrimental as vaccination status may fall behind. Though the outbreak may only last a month the residual effect may be seen by the need to catch up on routine care.
