Hello classmate!

Thank you for sharing your story. Besides knowing the language itself, knowing how to communicate is essential in every field. I have improved a lot so far in communication and understanding other cultures different from mine. Infinite Opportunity for Growth Nursing care is provided across different cultural contexts whenever relationships are established between nurses, patients, and families. In this way, culturally competent compassion indicates the maximum level of professional and personal commitment toward achieving health equity, reducing social discrimination, and securing holistic care (Hernandez et al., 2022).

Cultural diversity can be a significant barrier to effective care delivery. Nurses’ lack of skills in how to effectively handle relationships with them can result in inequality in care delivery. Consequently, cultural competence has become an international demand. Nurses learning cultural competency helps reduce the effects of cultural and ethnic discrimination on care and gives a sense of worth to patients from different cultures. Moreover, it minimizes the likelihood of malpractice, enhances patient trust in healthcare providers, promotes their treatment adherence, improves care effectiveness, promotes public health, reduces healthcare costs, and lowers morbidity and mortality rates (Alizadeh and Chavan, 2016).

Culture, spiritual beliefs, and language were identified as potential barriers to developing effective nurse-patient relationships. For example, Leininger’s theory extends to nurse-nurse alliances as shortages continue and the current climate of racism, violence, and the COVID-19 pandemic requires that nurses support each other to manage crises and care for an increasingly diverse population (Tall, 2023).

Lack of cultural awareness and failure to provide culturally appropriate treatment might lead to misdiagnosis, a decline in treatment compliance, and exacerbation of patients’ physical and mental conditions (Hall et al., 2015). I was surprised to know that Florida does not mandate cultural competency training to help nurses understand how to best respect, communicate, normalize differences, and effectively care for people from other cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds (Tall, 2023).
