Introduction

Personality is a characteristic that is used in blending a person making them unique considering the interaction and influence of genetics, environment, and nature concerning personality development (Robinson et al., 2013). This paper will take a retrospective look at the consistent features of my personality and my life history. I will also look at the effect of the thalamus in my daily life and how it functions in the brain. The paper will also discuss how my personality has changed and how nature and nurture have altered it. Finally, the essay will discuss my personality, the possible biases and compare my retrospective analysis to the scientific method.

Thalamus is located in the brain between the midbrain and cerebral cortex. It is found slightly above the brain stem. The purpose of the thalamus is to relay information, sensory signals and motor before they reach the cerebral cortex. It also regulates alertness, sleep, and wakefulness. The thalamus in everyday life is used to relay sensory impulse in different parts of the body from the receptors. The sensory signal is then seen traveling through the body surface and is then received as a form of sensation. After passing the thalamus it continues to the cerebral cortex to enable translation of the signal as temperature, touch or pain.

Therefore, the thalamus is considered as a relay station. This is because all the sensory information gets into the thalamus before it proceeds to the cortex and its destination. For instance, in my visual system, the visual information passes to the thalamus before passing into the visual cortex. Thus, the thalamus is known for its major role as a gatekeeper for any information that is being sent into the cortex, hence making sure that the information gets to the right place. Hence, the thalamus has played a major role in my life regarding relaying signals and sensory information.

Nature is considered as the personality and physical traits which are genetically inherited. This, therefore, is the encoded information in the genes which a person has inherited from the genes of both parents and carried them throughout their life. Nature is in control for the development of a being from the fetus to the normal adult. The genetic make has been responsible for their skin color, skin and their eyes as well as offering distinguishing features that are inherited (Specht et al., 2014).

There are some personality traits that I feel that I was born with and that are still existing in me. For instance, I can remember when I was a small child I used to have compassion for animals and people when I saw them struggling. Thus, it is therefore clear that nature relies on genetic coding to help the physical development and imparts negative and positive traits of an individual. Nature ensures that each has their distinct personalities that they were born and raised up. These are adopted from the genes and have an impact on the human behavior.

I believe that nurture has played a significant role in forming my personality. Nurture refers to the environmental experiences in one’s life that include the environmental factors that are raised by culture and social relationships. Environmental factors, in this case, involve various dimensions that include the social and physical environments. Nurture has had more influence in shaping my personality due to the multiple layers of action that range from the immediate to the larger social context. These include the families, neighbors, friends, local governments, and the school system. For instance, when I was a teenager I used to get peer pressure from my peers, and at the same time, I would get ideas from parents and the community. Through nurture, I have been able to grow up to be confident, self-reliant and I do not need anyone to approve my decisions and choices that I make.

Nurture can impart traits in an individual because environmental factors are involved in the upbringing of an individual. Nurture plays an important role in speeding up the individual’s capacity to learn and study new things. I have always been patient to acquire more knowledge and learn new things and listening to others. Therefore, I have been able to improve knowledge through practicing to adapt all creations in the environment. Nurture has focused on how environment molds my behavior and personality. Having being raised in a middle-class environment, I have experienced doing better than one raised by people who are poorer.

The society and culture have an enormous impact on the gender roles. The impression and attitude of an individual towards their own identity influences their own identity. Children learn about their gender from the time of birth. Through the cultural norms and activities, I was able to perceive my gender roles as a masculine. This was reinforced throughout the lives by the culture and society around me which included my parents, peers, and teachers. Many societies have relied on the use of biological sex to distinguish on gender from the other. The biological factors play a huge role in shaping the gender roles in a child. This is because the sexual organs and the hormones are responsible for the coordination of the physical differences in appearance. This is therefore important in gender identity hence ensuring that an individual has certain traits that reveal their gender roles.

The environment in which a child is brought up is able to shape their gender roles. This is through their interests, behaviors, and preferences that are strongly influenced by the environment. For instance, during the early stage, I only got exposure from my parents. Being a male, they dressed me in gender-specific clothes and also bought gender specific toys. Girls use to play with dolls while as boys we sued to play with cars and trucks. Boys would associate with other boys while girls are associated with those related to their gender. This, therefore, has solidified the understanding of gender roles both intentionally and unintentionally.

It is clear that our memories are not perfect. In this case, they tend to fail due to inadequate storage and encoding and in some part, our inability to retrieve stored information accurately. However, memory is also influenced by cognition that leads to errors and distortions in our behaviors and judgments. Cognitive biases have influenced my memory. These are the errors in judgment and memory that are caused by the inaccurate use of cognitive processes (Hertel et al., 2011). Cognitive processes that have affected my memory include confirmation bias, misinformation effect, overconfidence, availability heuristic, cognitive accessibility and counterfactual thinking. For instance, when I was doing my project, I thought I had contributed more than I did because it was easy to remember my contributions due to cognitive accessibility. Due to availability heuristic, one tends to think that things that often come to mind are found to be more common.

Conclusion

The science of psychology aims at emphasizing results that are grounded in scientific studies rather than anecdotes and personal experience. It is clear that science focuses on the formation of reasonable evidence to describe reality. According to science. Evidence from personal experience is mainly based on passions and feelings that may tend to be difficult to state description of evidence and valid theories. Therefore, getting evidence from personal experience may be wrong or turn out misleading.

Psychology, therefore, emphasizes evidence from scientific studies because they reveal reasonable evidence that is connected up to theory. I truly believe that personality is shaped by nature and nurture that one is brought up in. Some personality traits evolve along the way as one grows due to the influence of nurture. It is clear that one needs to learn to adapt and survive. Therefore, nature and nurture work in hand in shaping the personality of an individual and the daily life of an individual.
