Rochelle is a 24-year-old woman expecting her 4th child. She immigrated to Canada 13 years ago from Syria and identifies as a Muslim. While Rochelle’s first language is Arabic, she has been speaking English for most of her life. Rochelle is also fluent in 3 other languages.
Rochelle lives with her husband and three children in a small apartment north of Trenton. Her husband, Mahmoud works as a sales manager at a local company. He works long hours and often is needed at work on the weekends. Rochelle states her husband is out of town on business with his new job. He started the new job just a few weeks ago, shortly after the home visit. He now works as a sales manager at a local manufacturing business.
Rochelle states she is generally feeling okay but finds it hard to ‘keep up with everything at home’. She finds it hard to ask others for help and feels she does not have a lot of family or friend support.
Rochelle has experienced some severe nausea and vomiting since early on in pregnancy. She was hospitalized twice with her first pregnancy and at the time received medication and IV therapy.
On exam, Rochelle is pale, her mucous membranes are dry, and her skin turgor is down. She wretches and vomits during her exam. She states she has been able to keep small amounts of food and water down. She has not voided today.
