The abdominal assessment is unique in that both the subjective and objective components focus on the gastrointestinal (GI) tract but there are other organs and structures in the abdominal cavity that are not part of the GI tract. Using your previous or current nursing experience, provide an example of a client with an abdominal chief complaint with an etiology outside of the GI tract. • What questions did you ask of your client and which components of the physical exam helped you to identify the etiology? • Did your role as a nurse help to identify the cause of the client’s chief complaint in a unique way? • Did this experience change how you approach an abdominal assessment and how did you/will you change your practice going forward?
