Take a moment and call to mind some of the groups to which you belong. Most of us have some groups in common even though the individuals are different, like family, coworkers, and classmates.
Even if we don’t consciously think about the daily interactions we have, every exchange contributes to the web of connections that makes up American society. Society is complex, and so are its members. If we want to understand how all the pieces fit together, we can use theories to take a closer look. A theory is a system of ideas that work together to explain something.
Sociological theories view society, interactions among people, and the dynamics of workplace cultures from a broad perspective. We can use these theories to reflect on our own experiences and explore solutions to issues in society. Using these theories, we can examine social challenges, their causes, and their potential solutions.

A significant number of people are personally affected by one or more social issues. Many people, for instance, live in poverty and have trouble finding work. Many others suffer from bad health, and yet others struggle with family issues, excessive alcohol consumption, or criminal behavior. It is simple to assume that their problems are unique to them and that they, along with other people who have the same problems, are fully to blame for their troubles. This is because it is easy to assume that their problems are unique to them.
The functionalist theory, the conflict theory, and the symbolic interactionist theory are the three main theoretical views that influence sociological thought on social problems. Despite the fact that these viewpoints investigate the same societal issues, they do so in distinctive ways. When taken into consideration together, their points of view provide a more comprehensive analysis of societal issues than any one of the views can provide on its own.
