During the latter part of the 19th century and the early 20th century in the United States, a political and social reform movement known as the Progressive movement was responsible for bringing about significant reforms. During this time period, which is known as the Progressive Era, the movement’s objectives included strengthening the national government and resolving the economic, social, and political aspirations of the people. The progressives recognized aspects of American society that needed to be improved, most notably putting a stop to the excessive wealth concentration among the nation’s elite and the huge economic and political dominance of big business.
