Patient safety is always our number one priority. A nurse has a duty to the patient to ensure safety. Introduction

The practice of nursing involves the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities; the prevention of illness and injury; the facilitation of healing; the alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human responses; and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations.

The “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” and “how” of nursing practice are all detailed in the Scope of Nursing Practice document. It is necessary to provide responses to each of these questions in order to paint a comprehensive picture of the dynamic and complex nursing practice, as well as its ever-changing boundaries and membership. The “what” of nursing is succinctly described by the definition of nursing, which can be found in most dictionaries. The “who” constituency is comprised of registered nurses and advanced practice registered nurses, all of whom have completed nursing education, attained appropriate titles, and are in possession of current nursing licenses.

Nursing can take place “when” there is a requirement for nursing knowledge, wisdom, caring, leadership, practice, or education. This can take place at any time and in any location. Nursing can take place in any setting “where” there is a patient or client who requires assistance in the form of care, information, or advocacy. The “how” of nursing practice can be defined as the means, methods, and manners that are utilized by nurses in the course of their professional work. The “why” is characterized as nursing’s response to the changing needs of society to achieve positive healthcare consumer outcomes in accordance with nursing’s social contract, which stipulates that nurses have an obligation to society. The amount of breadth and depth to which individual registered nurses and advanced practice registered nurses engage in the total scope of nursing practice is dependent on their level of education, the amount of experience they have, the role they play, and the population that they serve.
