Use of force, including lethal force, is governed by both law and policy. Discuss the different circles of the Ontario Use of Force Model, including the levels of resistance and force intervention.  Your discussion should also include an explanation of the legal justification for use of force, as well as the use of force standards (policy).  Use examples where applicable. There is no single, globally accepted definition of what constitutes the use of force. Force is defined as “the degree of effort required by police to compel cooperation by an uncooperative person” by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).

Officers receive direction from their respective agencies, but there is no universally accepted set of regulations that govern when and how much force should be used by officers.
The amount of force that an officer employs is determined on the circumstances. Because of this wide range of circumstances, rules for the use of force are based on a variety of factors, including the officer’s level of training or experience.

The purpose of a police officer is to regain control as soon as feasible while also protecting the surrounding population. When all other methods of restoring safety in a community have failed, an officer’s last resort is to use force. When all other methods have failed, force must be used.

In every event involving the use of force, injuries may occur, and police should ensure that individuals who are hurt receive medical attention and that the family of any injured person is notified.

Excessive force is used. [2] It is difficult to assess the frequency of police use-of-force incidents that can be classified as justifiable or excessive in nature. Officer-involved shootings and incidents in which police employ excessive force have been recorded but there has been no comprehensive database of such incidents.
