Don’t Sacrifice Clarity for Awkward Wording

When writing essays or other types of writings, it is important that the writing be clear and understandable. Some writers choose to purposely try to confuse readers by using strange wording or sentence structure in order to make their work seem more complex than it actually is. However, while this may cause some readers to become confused, most of the people reading your paper will not know why you are using jargon instead of clearer language.

Another example would be writing “I’m going outside right now” when you should actually be writing “I’m going outside now”.

Writing long, confusing sentences also decreases the likelihood of people being able to quickly read through your work. If a person has to spend a lot of time trying to decipher what you are actually trying to say before they can understand it, then that will result in them not giving as much thought as they could have if your essay was written more simply. This is why it’s important for you to write short sentences with concise wording if you want better results from your teachers and peers.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with using complicated words or long sentences every once in a while, but if this becomes a common occurrence throughout the entire paper then people probably won’t be able to appreciate your work. You should use complex words or sentence structure sparingly in order to make them more effective when you do actually need to use them.
