Did Nurse Joserine delegate tasks appropriately? Why or why not?

Delegating responsibilities is a task that necessitates the completion of various procedures in order to guarantee that activities operate smoothly and with minimal disruptions (Levin, 2018). Procedures are expected to run in a precise way in any organization. If a specific person is absent, his or her responsibilities must be taken over by someone else who is capable of filling the void. In the example of Nurse Joserine, I believe she was correct in delegating her responsibilities since she needed a break. She, on the other hand, did not do a particularly excellent job. Joserine only followed two of the five steps for effective delegation. She started by appointing the right people to each assignment. Second, she addressed the responsibilities and expectations of the people who had been appointed. She did not, however, specify a deadline or a method for assessing the individual’s development. Besides, Joserine barely managed to convey to her delegates the level of power that came with their acquired roles.

Moreover, the delegation went horribly wrong. This is due to the fact that the person delegating the functions did not have all of the necessary information. Instead, he chose to refer those who would be performing the functions to others. That was a blunder in information transmission. Delegation procedures: Identify the roles that need to be delegated and select a person who is capable of performing the function based on their experience. Identify and make available any resources that will ensure appropriate delegation of functions during the process. Develop rapport in order to establish positive interactions that will lead to the establishment of mutual trust between the persons concerned. Who will be held accountable for the outcomes of the roles/tasks that Nurse Joserine has delegated?

Accountability is a crucial characteristic that ensures people maintain high levels of responsibility (Kendall, 2018). The selected delegates in the case of Joserine must be under the control of someone higher up. The nurse coordinator, who has been tasked with dealing with crises and other duties, will report to the medical institution’s CEO. Because there is no one else who can fill this position, the clinical specialist will also report to the CEO. It is vital to highlight, however, that these two persons lack adequate expertise of how to handle the responsibilities that have been allocated to them. As a result, if any damages occur, Nurse Joserine will be held liable for the actions of her representatives.

According to Khadim et al. (2018), effective leaders tend to delegate certain tasks to others to achieve organizational goals more effectively. The delegation of tasks not only lightens a leader’s workload but also works to motivate the individuals who have been trusted with the tasks while enhancing their value and competence at the workplace. However, several actions must be taken to delegate tasks effectively. In the case presented, Nurse Joserine failed to delegate his tasks appropriately. He only did two things right: he chose appropriate candidates for the tasks and outlined their duties and expectations. The problem is that he simply transferred all his tasks to them without easing them into their new roles. Ideally, he should have taken the two individuals under his wings and made them act as his apprentices. This would ensure that he would monitor their progress and assess them to find out if they would be competent in their new roles (Khadim et al., 2018). Additionally, Nurse Joserine failed to organize how the two individuals would be reporting their progress to him so that he ensures everything was going according to plan.

Nurse Joserine will be held accountable for the outcomes of the roles and tasks, which he has delegated to Janet Jaleen, the nursing coordinator, and Jo Ellen Mae, the clinical nurse. Campbell et al. (2020) note that a manager is responsible for the actions of his/her juniors if they are related to the tasks he had delegated to them. As the Nurse Manager, part of Nurse Joserine’s roles included the handling of disciplinary problems and quality improvement activities. Although he was allowed to delegate some of the tasks that fell under these two activities, ultimately, he was the one tasked by his superiors to ensure that disciplinary and quality improvement issues are handled as per the institution’s regulations. Therefore, he was fully responsible for the actions of the nursing coordinator and the clinical nurse since he was the one who chose them to handle his tasks on his behalf.
